Meet Flora another of our incredible textile designers. A printmaker, forager, and natural dyer. Flora’s work is inspired by wild plants and natural forms, birds, creatures and botanical shapes which she uses to create printed stylised shapes and drawings.
We chatted the other day about her inspiration and seaweed jelly (read on to find out more!) - here are a few snippets:
Who/what inspires you the most?
I am inspired by the natural world. Being in the seasons, learning about the wild plants that grow around us. Developing close relationships with these plants and using them for craft projects, as well as food and medicine.
How best would you describe your creative style?
Quick, spontaneous, exploratory and playful. Not always the best at finishing a project, I love trying new techniques and experimenting.
What do you enjoy most about crafting?
I love being practical and using my hands. I enjoy how craft brings people together, solving each-other's creative problems, sharing ideas. Simply having fun and making things together.
What’s the strangest thing you have ever made?
I made a seaweed and blackberry jelly this summer - and used it for silk-screen printing then ate the rest for desert. It tasted surprisingly good and made a nice purple print!
Why do you enjoy hosting workshops?
I love sharing skills through which others can express their creativity. It is amazing seeing the different creative journey everyone goes on. Particularly those who may not have the time or space to be creative in their day to day lives. I love showing that you don't need to be expert at drawing to make something beautiful. All the skills I teach are simple and can be done at home without the need of complicated equipment.
