Kate Marsden aka Made by Mrs M

Meet Kate, who's beautiful Mid Century Modern inspired prints on fabric are popping up all round London! We chatted to her recently about her creative life.
  • Who or what inspired you to take up a creative life?

I can’t remember what first inspired me – when I was a little girl I always wanted to be a fashion designer and so I ended up going to art college. It was a combination of having a baby (and a rough time returning to work in the City) that inspired me to finally make the jump to doing this as my full time job.

  • What's the strangest thing you've ever made?

A few years ago I created a series of diaries (some of which were actual books, some of which weren’t) using knitting and crochet. I actually exhibited them at an artists’ book fair and several small galleries. They were certainly different and a conversation starter!

  • Describe your creative style

Bold, colourful, unusual – a little bit like marmite!

  • What inspires you day to day?

I honestly think that 15 years of working in a very corporate environment is what keeps me inspired now that I don’t do that any more. Whenever I’m having a bad day or lacking in motivation, I remind myself how lucky I am that I’m finally able to do something I love. Failing that, I’ll take a break and do some gardening!

  • If you didn't do this, what would you love to do?

I’d love to be an architect – buildings fascinate me. Failing that, I’ve always rather fancied being a train driver!

  • What's the best thing about having a creative career?

I love the variety of work I do (although juggling multiple small projects can be challenging) – also, as I’m self employed I have the flexibility to choose the projects I take on. Oh and the wonderful people I get to work with – so that’s 3 things!
